The Chinook salmon is the largest Pacific salmon out there. We fish for Kasilof River kings during the peak time from late May through mid to late June.
July/early august through
september
Silver Salmon
Silvers are an acrobatic and lively fish when you get one on the end of your line. They typically weigh about 6-18 pounds. The best time to fish for silvers is late July/early August through September.
June through october
Rainbow trout
There’s no better place to catch some big, beautiful rainbows than the Kenai River. They rush in to feast on the salmon eggs, and gorge while they get huge! The best time to fish for rainbows is June through October.
Mid-may through july
Sockeye salmon
Red (Sockeye) salmon are as delicious to eat as they are fun to catch. The most abundant salmon species, they typically weigh anywhere from 6 to 12 pounds. The best time to fish for reds on a Kenai River or Kasilof Rivre fishing charter is June through mid-August.
Mid-may through july
Steelhead
The steelhead trout is one of the most challenging and fascinating fish when it comes to Alaska fishing. They are a bit more challenging to catch but worth the effort. The best steelhead fishing is spring and fall.
The Best Times
to Book kenai and kasilof river Fishing Charters
The timing of your fishing trip will depend on what kind of fish you’re after
spring
We start the fishing season off with kings on the Kasilof in May. I recently wrote a Kasilof King article for Fish Alaska’s website. The springtime and beginning of summer bring out aggressive and hungry trout and Dolly Varden (char). These are catch-and-release only. We can catch them with both fly and spinning gear.
Summer
On into June king salmon fishing remains strong on the Kasilof. June is even more widely noted for great red (sockeye) salmon runs. We typically book Kenai River fishing charters for red salmon during the first run in June and the second run in July until mid-August. We are often able to limit out in shorter periods of time so sockeye charters are half day trips. We also fish the Kasilof for sockeye.
Fall
Sockeye slows down, and the bite turns to the Silver (coho) Salmon that are making their way upriver. By the end of August, we are in full swing fishing for these acrobatic salmon. Fall is also great for trophy Trout and Dollies! We love teaching and help fly anglers advance their aptitude while we’re trout fishing. We also guide for steelhead trout in the fall.
